City of Kaukauna Earns ‘High Flyer’ Status in Bird City Wisconsin Program

Posted on Dec 6, 2023 by

The City of Kaukauna has officially achieved ‘High Flyer’ status in the Bird City Wisconsin Program in 2023! This achievement is a celebration of the City’s environmental stewardship and community commitment to fostering a bird-friendly environment and promoting conservation efforts.

To be recognized by Bird City Wisconsin, a community must meet criteria spread across four categories: creating, protecting, and restoring bird habitat; addressing threats to birds; engaging people in birding and conservation; and encouraging sustainable practices.

Through initiatives such as the bald eagle citizen science program, native prairie restoration, buckthorn and other invasive species removal, the City has demonstrated a dedication to preserving and enhancing the natural environment.

“We are excited to announce that the City of Kaukauna has once again been recognized as a Bird City Wisconsin, this year achieving ‘High Flyer’ status,” said Mayor Tony Penterman. “This accomplishment reflects the collaborative efforts between the City, 1000 Islands Environmental Center, and the community to celebrate and conserve our diverse bird population.”

Bird City Wisconsin was created in 2009 and began recognizing communities the following year. The program recognized municipalities across the state for the conservation and educational activities that they undertake to make their communities healthy for birds… and people.
