Bicycle Safety

The Kaukauna Police Department is increasing efforts in the enforcement of bicycle laws.

As we encounter more children on the road, we find that they don’t understand the basic laws that govern bicycles. We are starting with bicycle safety schools. We are notifying parents of children warned for violating bicycle laws.

We have been promoting helmets and rewarding children that have been following safety rules.

New Bicycle Ordinance

7.11(8)(a)(b) This City ordinance prohibits older children and adults from operating a bicycle on any sidewalk. No person over the age of 13 may ride on the sidewalk unless accompanying a bicycle rider who is under 13 or is a newspaper carrier in the performance of duty.

Bike License

It is an ordinance requirement to get a bike license for your bicycle. You can put a license on a new or used bike.

You can get a license at the Kaukauna Police Department for $2.00. You will need the serial number on the bottom of the bike, along with the full description.

If your bike is ever lost or stolen and we recover the bike, we will call the owner if it is licensed.

If it is not licensed, we will keep it in evidence for 90 days. If no one claims the bike, it is put into the bike auction held in the spring.

Child Identification Kits

The Kaukauna Police Department has a Child Identification program which includes a Child ID Kit.

These kits have played an integral part in the recovery and identification of missing children.

The kit includes; childs photograph, personal information (name, address, hair color, eye color, height, etc.) blood type, a DNA sample (a strand of hair with root) and an ink pad to take fingerprints.

Fingerprint Kits are available at the Kaukauna Police Department during lobby hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Crime Prevention

Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch are programs to assist the prevention of crime and lead to the apprehension of criminals. The design of these programs is to train individuals in the detection and prevention of crime.

The areas include home and business security, identification of suspicious activity, and proper methods of reporting crime.

Most people believe that a Neighborhood Watch Program would take up a lot of their time and consist of many responsibilities. This is not true. We try to make the program fun and educational. We would like you to attend a minimum of two functions a year so that you get to know your neighbors and stay in touch with them.

If you are interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch Group or have any questions, please contact the Kaukauna Police Department at 920-766-6333, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers is a Police/Community Program geared toward the fight against crime. It involves the public, the media, and the police.

Quad Communities Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards up to $1000 and anonymity to citizens who furnish information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of all felony and certain misdemeanor offenders, the recovery of stolen property, and dangerous drugs.

Crime Stoppers has helped police solve felony cases and aided in the recovery of many thousands of dollars worth of stolen property and dangerous drugs. Thousands of dollars in rewards have been paid to citizens of Wisconsin for information that resulted in the arrest or conviction of offenders.

In addition, Crime Stoppers works with every police department in the Quad Communities and in Outagamie County by forwarding information to those agencies for investigations.

The communities of Kaukauna, Kimberly, Little Chute and Combined Locks need your help. If you have information of a crime, you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1000. All informants are kept strictly confidential.

If you have information, please call 920-788-9090.

McGruff Program

The McGruff Program incorporates many different functions of crime prevention. The Kaukauna Police Department is currently using McGruff for safe houses and also for discussions and appearances.

The McGruff houses are safe zones for people in trouble. The house is identified by a McGruff poster in the window. The owners of the homes have completed a background check and are deemed a safe place to go.

McGruff is used for educational talks in situations where children are involved. Although McGruff himself does not talk, he usually assists an officer in making the children feel more comfortable.

If you are interested in becoming a McGruff house or having McGruff at your event, please contact the Kaukauna Police Department at 920-766-6333, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
