5.24.24 – Storm updates
Due to damage caused by Tuesday’s storm, Upper Grignon Park (including the disk golf course) and White City Park will be closed until our crews can clear hanging branches and damaged trees.
As of Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service in Green Bay declared Tuesday’s storm to be an F1 tornado after assessing the damages. Outdoor warning sirens did not sound Tuesday night because the National Weather Service did not issue a tornado warning. We received reports that resident’s phones and radios did not sound, these warnings are also tied to the National Weather Service. Our Fire Chief and Emergency Manager, Jake Carrel, gives a good explanation here: https://fox11online.com/news/local/kaukaunas-emergency-manager-explains-why-sirens-didnt-sound-when-tornado-hit-national-weather-service-jake-carrel-northeast-wisconsin
As a reminder, these are outdoor warning sirens and are meant to be heard by those outside of the home. The City of Kaukauna has weather radios available on the second floor of the Municipal Services Building (144 W. 2nd Street) free of charge. Please note: These radios are available for the elderly, unhoused, people with low income, and those who do not have access to smartphones. You will be required to fill out a form to receive a radio.
Thanks to the help of the Red Cross and Outagamie County Emergency Management, displaced residents have been placed in temporary housing.
Additionally, the alternate brush disposal site located at the Bayorgeon Softball Field #1 on 700 Dodge St. will remain open for a few weeks until the need lessens. If you are unable to access the disposal site, the Street Department will continue to collect brush placed on the terrace for the next few weeks as well. Please pile brush parallel with the street and in separate piles to make the cleanup process easier and faster. If you have questions regarding cleanup efforts, please contact our Street Department https://kaukauna.gov/departments/public-works/.
