River View Middle School Traffic Communication

See below for information from River View Middle School regarding traffic flow for the upcoming school year due to the Island Street Bridge construction.

This communication is to inform you of the Island Street Bridge construction in relation to traffic flow at River View Middle School.  We recently learned from the Director of Public Works and City Engineer that the Department of Transportation project will temporarily close Island Street near Kaukauna Utilities and Maple Street as well.  The project is slated to begin on August 15 and is projected to take approximately three months to complete.

As we had done in 2016 with the Island Street Bridge Project, representatives from the Kaukauna Area School District recently met with representatives from the City of Kaukauna, the Kaukauna Police Department, the Kaukauna Fire Department, and Kobussen Buses LTD.  We discussed how the Island Street Project will affect the flow of traffic to and from River View Middle School; we shared options to address the anticipated traffic congestion; and we developed a plan to address these concerns with a focus on student safety.

Until the Island Street Bridge construction has been completed, the Crooks Avenue entrance to River View will be closed beginning on September 1, 2022.  Therefore, the only entrance and exit to the River View parking lot will be via the new entrance/exit on Elm Street off of Island Street.  In a separate project, the District partnered with the City of Kaukauna to add traffic signals at Elm Street to increase traffic flow efficiency and to create a safer crossing area for students.  This new entrance/exit replaces the Oak Street exit.  A City Crossing Guard will be stationed at this location before and after school.

Traffic cones will be placed daily along the north end of the lot to create a loop for traffic to flow.  Only buses, staff, and approved visitors should enter the main lot before and after school hours (7:50 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.).  During school hours, parents/guardians who have an appointment or who are dropping off a student for school may also use the main lot.  Please see the linked map, titled ” River View Middle School Drop-Off Location and Traffic Flow Map 2022” for a visual representation.

In addition, we identified three nearby alternate sites at which parents/guardians can drop off and/or pick up their student(s) to walk to River View.  These include the former library parking lot, the City/Farmers Market Parking Lot, and the Hydro Park Parking Lot.  On the same map, you will see walking routes from each of these locations.  In addition, we will have a transfer location at the Kaukauna High School Soccer Field Parking Lot off of Loderbauer Road (see ” KHS Transfer Site to RVMS Map”).  Parents may drop off their River View Middle School students between 7:10 a.m. and 7:25 a.m.  Those students may then get on a bus that will pick up and transport them to River View Middle School.  This option will also be available after school at which time parents can pick up their student(s) in the KHS Soccer Field Parking Lot.  The utilization of these drop-off and/or pick-up sites will help to alleviate traffic congestion near Island Street and Elm Street.
