City of Kaukauna Common Council Approves Change to Development at 222 Lawe Street
The City of Kaukauna Common Council unanimously approved a developer’s agreement at their July 19th meeting to move forward with the construction of a new apartment complex located on the currently vacant lot at 222 Lawe Street. This project was previously slated as a hotel/apartment development, but after dealing with current supply issues, the scope switched direction.
As approved by Council, this development will include two 5-story 90-unit (180 unit total) market rate apartments. The apartments are luxury class A units and will incorporate high end amenities like wood floors, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, balconies, and more. Apartments will range from studio size to 3-bedroom units. The complex will also include underground parking, as well as surface parking on-site.
“We are so excited to bring this development to Kaukauna and become a part of the community,” said Alvin Johnson, CEO of Dreamville Kaukauna LLC. “Dreamville Kaukauna Apartments are one of a kind for this area. We have designed our buildings with net zero ready, indoor air quality certified, class A buildings for our tenant’s quality of life. We feel our extensive experience in multi-family developments makes us a great fit for this project and we can’t wait to start.”
The developer has a strong interest in green buildings. From concept to design to construction, this building will be a net zero project. Notably, it will be one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the state (and top 1% of multi-family buildings in the country)!
Joe Stephenson, Director of Planning & Community Development for the City of Kaukauna, noted, “Dreamville Kaukauna is a high end, environmentally friendly development that will not only change the City’s skyline but also change the City’s commercial core. 180 market rate apartment units, right in the heart of Kaukauna, will have a tremendously positive impact on all our local businesses and help to breathe new life into the City’s Uptown and Downtown districts.”
A hotel project is still in the hopes of City staff, however after some project repositioning and a market study, a hotel appears to be a better fit near the highway 41 corridor.
“Despite the hurdles and changes of this development project, I am confident in the direction it is heading,” said Tony Penterman, Mayor of the City of Kaukauna. “To see a lot that has been vacant for the last 20 years turn into a great development is an exciting thing for the City of Kaukauna.”
A final site plan for the apartment project will go to the City Plan Commission for final approval next month. Watch for further information on a fall 2022 groundbreaking. Completion of the project is anticipated for fall of 2023.
