Backyard Chickens

The Health and Recreation Committee reviewed the request from a few interested residents asking the committee to consider allowing raising chickens within the city limits. The current ordinance code Section 11.12 prohibits the keeping of chickens within the city limits.
The committee members asked that staff review previous minutes of when this ordinance was adopted to see what the issues and reasons where back then to have such an ordinance prohibiting chickens.
This subject will then be revisited at a future Council meeting. If you have any questions, please contact your alderperson.

What was the result of this? Are chickens allowed now?
A Chicken Keeping Permit must be taken out in the Clerk’s office (a limited number will be offered per year). All provisions on the permit must be followed. I will scan and send a copy of the permit to your email: [email protected].
Ms Koch could I also get a copy of the chicken keeping permit. While in general I am not sure it’s a terrible idea-but my neighbor has set up a chicken pen that smells horrific next to a window on the side property line of my house. I would like to think that our city was wise enough to ensure that the permit required the chicken coop to be kept at a point on the home owners propety where it would not represent a nuisance or health hazard to neighboring properties. In this case the home owner chose the location that is most beneficial for her own yard aesthetics-and no one else’s.
