Are you required to place a shed or detached garage on a concrete slab?

Yes – anything over 100SF in size must be on a concrete slab. Structures must be anchored to the slab and the slab must be poured following the required setbacks for the shed or detached garage.

Do I need a permit to pour a concrete slab for my shed or detached garage?

No – your shed or detached garage permit covers this work and a separate permit is not required. We always recommend when pouring concrete that you contact Diggers Hotline to ensure that you do not pour over a utility line. If the utility company needs to access a utility under your concrete slab, it is the owners responsibility to remove and relocate it later.

How far off the property line does my driveway need to be?

Driveways should be a minimum of 2’ off of the side property lines. Remember that driveways need to lead to a structure (shed, detached garage, or attached garage) and those items have required minimum setbacks, as well.

I live in a newly built home. Who is responsible for installing the sidewalk in front of my home?

Most of the time, builders do not install sidewalks for homeowners. This is a homeowner responsibility. You may hire anyone you like to install your sidewalk, as long as they are a licensed sidewalk builder in the City of Kaukauna. The City of Kaukauna Engineering Department can set grades for sidewalks for residents at no charge with advance notice. Please note, if you do not install a sidewalk in front of your home, the City will add it to an upcoming concrete street project schedule and assess you for the installation on your property taxes.
