October is Fire Safety Month
Kaukauna FD is committed to the prevention of fires and the safety of the community. October has been designated as National Fire Prevention Month — a time when public service departments across America join forces to spread the word about fire safety. Sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Fire Prevention Month has roots that date back to The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the deadliest wildland fire in US history: the Peshtigo forest fire of 1871.
Everyone needs to have an escape plan:
- Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
- Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
- Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
- Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
- Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
- Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
Kaukauna FD will be visiting multiple area schools and community buildings to spread the Fire Safety message throughout October. If you are a teacher or community member and would like to schedule a visit please call the fire department at 920-766-6320 (ext. 0) to plan a fire safety visit.
